Amendments to the Law on Agricultural Land

In the Official Gazette of the Republic of North Macedonia no. 91 of 28.04.2023, the amendments to the Law on Agricultural Land have been announced. The adopted amendments to the law provide extension of concession agreements for the use of agricultural land from 5 to 15 years. Before the adoption of this amendment to the law, it was regulated that after the expiration of the contract for the lease of agricultural land in state ownership at the request of the lessee, if the lessee has  fulfilled the obligations of the lease agreement, the Minister may, after a positive opinion from the State attorney’s office of the Republic of North Macedonia and after prior consent of the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia with an immediate agreement to conclude a new lease agreement with the tenant, but at most for a period of 5 years.

In order to be in the interest of farmers and legal entities engaged in agricultural activity, as well as for more efficient and rational use of agricultural land, the amendment to the law was adopted, which extended the deadline for the extension of concession agreements from 5 at 15 years. In this way,  to the farmers is given the opportunity to make better use of the IPARD programs for agriculture and other agricultural financing programs, and better security and stability is enabled in the use of agricultural land.
