Amendments to the Consumer Protection Law

Law for amending and supplementing the Consumer Protection Law was published in the Official Gazette No. 49 of the Republic of North Macedonia dated 04.03.2025. In accordance with the provisions of the law, it enters into force on the day of its publication in the Official Gazette.

The purpose of the adoption of the Law is to protect the interests of consumers and to ensure better consumer information about product prices, as well as the opportunity for consumers to compare prices among different traders. Such a legal solution is expected to contribute to reducing prices, increasing the transparency of traders towards consumers, as well as preventing unfair trade practices and market abuse.

The adopted Law for amending and supplementing the Consumer Protection Law stipulates a mandatory obligation for traders to publish on their websites the unit price of each item they offer for sale. This obligation applies to all traders (small, medium and large traders) who carry out the activity of Retail Trade, whereby traders who are obliged to publish the prices of their goods that they offer for sale are obliged to harmonize their operations within 45 days from the date of entry into force of this law.

With the new legal amendments, there is also a change in the section of misdemeanor provisions in the Law on Consumer Protection, whereby mandatory fines are prescribed for traders who act contrary to the provisions of the law, and changes are also foreseen in the authorizations that the inspectors of the State Market Inspectorate have over the implementation of the provisions of the law.
